Chimper #143
Fuyuma was already polishing a set of weights when the first trainees arrived for morning drills, their eyes squinting at the rising sun. A new recruit once asked their instructor why the merchant with the little plant on their head was so famously suspicious. The instructor laughed. "You think that plant brings them good fortune? Watch them. They treat every deal at The Dojo like a potential ambush, every customer a possible spy. They survived the lean years by never once taking anyone at their word. That sprout isn't a good luck charm. It's a lie detector. They say its leaves tremble when a falsehood is spoken nearby. Fuyuma isn't lucky; they just never get fooled."
