Chimper #1611
The faint scent of sulfur clung to the ancient scroll, a constant reminder of its origin. It was a gift from Jiro—or rather, a challenge. Jiro, who first called them Yukako the Meek in their academy days, a jab at their quiet, methodical approach. For years, their rivalry had been the engine of their research; Jiro would recklessly explore The Underworld, and Yukako would patiently decipher the dangerous truths their rival brought back. The jagged scar across Yukako’s cheek was from the one time they went together. A ritual Jiro rushed went awry, and only Yukako’s cool-headed use of their combat pole held back the enraged spirits long enough for them both to escape. Jiro still uses the name, but the insult has curdled into respect. One cannot be meek to survive the Underworld, after all. Only very, very determined.
