Chimper #780
Two lanterns, one wrong turn, and a completely unintentional career. Shuuta was perfectly happy down by the docks where the fishing boats came in, their only ambition a full net. The lanterns were an impulse buy, meant to brighten their small hut against the constant spray from the great falls. Then came the fog. It swallowed the winding stone stairs to the upper city, stranding a group of travelers, including the merchant Houjurou. Muttering about the disruption, Shuuta lit the lanterns. Their light cut through the haze, and they reluctantly guided the terrified group to the top. Houjurou saw not a grumbler, but an opportunity. They became partners, with Houjurou handling the coin and Shuuta just "holding the light." Shuuta still claims to be a fisher, but the gleeful shout that escapes when they hear a new tale from a faraway land tells a different story.
