Scavengers in The Dragon Wastelands whisper that the carved cane Ichinosuke carries was once a legendary sword, shattered in the final battle against Ten'no. They say its hilt is buried somewhere beneath the skeletal remains of a colossal beast, a relic of a bygone fury. The truth is simpler, and sadder. The blade was not broken; it was thrown into a chasm the day Kareru, their childhood friend, fell. Ichinosuke had been their sworn guardian, and their sword had failed. In its place, they took up this simple staff. It does not guard against armies, but it finds sure footing in the treacherous fog and helps lost travelers find their way. The fire in their eyes is not for a foe, but for a promise they can no longer keep.
