Chimper #1854
There's a saying in The Heart of the Forest: ‘The quietest waters run the deepest.’ It was likely first spoken about One of the Low Crossing. To merchants, they are a river spirit, a silent figure in a red poncho and kitsune mask whose war paint marks them as a territorial guardian. They hurry across the shallows, never speaking. The locals tell a different story. To them, One is just a fisher, a strange but harmless presence who brings impossible luck to the waters. But the children have a third version. They don’t speak of spirits or luck. They whisper of a wrinkled face glimpsed for a moment, and of upset eyes that held the same quiet grief as a river that has seen too many things wash away.
