The problem was that their help always ended in catastrophe. Their attempt to organize the village library by scent resulted in a sneeze-induced avalanche of scrolls. When they tried to improve the communal stew pot with a rare spice, it turned everything a vibrant, harmless, but inedible blue. They earned the Dragonslayer Blade not by felling a beast, but by accidentally triggering a series of events involving a beehive, a runaway fruit cart, and a very startled merchant that somehow convinced a wandering monster to leave the territory forever. The villagers gave them the blade with genuine gratitude and a pact to never let them cook again.
